Cutting it up in Spring Training: Ryan Helsley

Let’s talk Ryan Helsley. The Cardinals’ closer is absolutely dialed in this spring, and he’s generating a ton of buzz. But this shouldn’t come as a surprise since we know the NBC World Series runs through his DNA. His development with the Santa Barbara Foresters is a key piece of his trajectory, and it’s a narrative we’re excited to highlight. This is a great example of the tournament’s ability to foster talent.

Spring Training Performance: Developing the Cutter

Helsley’s Spring Training performance has been exceptionally strong. Reports say his command is locked in, and his velocity remains a significant asset. However, what’s really exciting is his focus on developing a cutter. Ryan is clearly focused on refining his arsenal, as he prepares to anchor the Cardinals’ bullpen. Building on his phenomenal 2024 season, where he led MLB in saves (49), save opportunities (53), and save percentage (92.5%), Helsley’s primary goal for 2025 is to prove he can maintain that high level of performance. He’s told reporters that he’s taking it one day at a time, avoiding pressure and aiming to be the best version of himself. The addition of the cutter gives him another weapon to combat opposing hitters, adding movement and deception to his already formidable fastball. Excited to see what that cutter does during the regular season!

NBC World Series Connection:

It’s hard to ignore Helsley’s experience with the Santa Barbara Foresters at the NBC World Series and what that did for his game. This tournament provided a highly competitive environment, exposing him to top-tier amateur talent. That, paired with the Foresters’ established program, was pivotal to his development. Who could forget that Helsley was recognized as the NBC Graduate of the Year in 2023, a testament to his exceptional career trajectory and the lasting impact of his time in the tournament? The NBC World Series is an incredible training ground for exceptional talent!

Major League Success:

How did Ryan turn that training into success? Glad you asked! Last season, he achieved a historic milestone by setting a new Cardinals’ single-season saves record, surpassing Trevor Rosenthal’s previous record with 49 saves. His high-velocity fastball and reliable consistency solidified his position as a premier closer. Helsley didn’t stop there. Ryan went on to be named the Trevor Hoffman National League Reliever of the Year, the first Cardinal to do so since the award’s inception in 2014.. With the addition of his new cutter, Helsley is looking to further his already impressive career and possibly add to his trophy case. And to think we were able to witness an important part of his baseball journey here in Wichita.
