Rocky Mountain Baseball League
The Cougars make their ninth MWE appearance with a second-place finish in the Rocky Mountain Baseball League behind Hays. The Cougars’ best showing was a 3rd place finish (4-2) in in 2010.
The Cougars finished with an 11-13 league record and 25-27 overall last season. With this league record, the Cougars finished in forth place in league play for 2019. The Cougars entered the Regional Tournament as the No. 4 seed. Fighting through the loser’s bracket and advancing to the championship game, the Cougars received an at-large bid to the NBC World Series.
At the 2019 NBC World Series, the Cougars came up with 22 hits and six doubles in just three games. Denver’s pitching staff combined for a 3.12 earned run average and struck out 22 batters. The Cougars also came up with 78 putouts on defense. The Cougars are led by head coach and general manager, Mark Cerullo, and assisted by Mark Laschanzky

HUTCHINSON, Kan. – The No. 10 seed Denver, CO Cougars upset the No. 7 Rose Hill, KS Sluggers 6-5 in the NBC World Series powered by Evergy on Monday night at Hobart-Detter Field. 

Chase Hamilton led the Cougars offensively with a 3-for-5 outing with two RBIs and Dante Freeman went 3-for-4 for Rose Hill to go along with two RBIs. Rose Hill’s pitching staff combined for 11 strikeouts and Denver’s Connor Gibson helped the Cougars finish off the job in the final 2.2 innings with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed. 

Following a 1-1 tie at the end of the first inning, the Cougars scored five unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead through the middle of the fifth inning. Rose Hill, however, answered back in the bottom of the fifth inning with two runs off a sacrifice fly and a double by Hunter Gibson from Wichita State. 

Freeman’s two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Sluggers to cut the deficit to one run, loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth with two outs. Denver, however, forced the strikeout to strand the bases to come up with the win. 

The Cougars face the Santa Barbara, CA Foresters on Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium. The Sluggers will play on Wednesday in Hutchinson, with their opponent and game time to be determined.

WICHITA, Kan. – Only allowing two hits, the Santa Barbara, CA Foresters defeated the Denver, CO Cougars 8-0 by run-rule in the seventh inning in the 2020 NBC World Series powered by Evergy on Tuesday night at Eck Stadium.

Christian Encarnacion and Casey Dykstra led the Foresters with two hits each, Dykstra co-leading the team with two RBIs.

Matthew McLain came up with the first home run at Eck Stadium of the 2020 NBC World Series in the top of the first inning, with a sacrifice fly following a ground-rule double scoring the second run of the game for the Foresters. Santa Barbara scored again off a wild pitch to extend its lead 3-0 heading into the middle of the first.

Sean McLain smashed a home run in the top of the fourth inning with a runner on base to extend the Foresters’ lead to five runs, with another home run by Encarnacion allowing Santa Barbara to go up 6-0. Dykstra capped off Santa Barbara’s scoring run with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Santa Barbara will play the Liberal, KS Bee Jays on Thursday in Wichita. The Cougars will play the Hattiesburg, MS Black Sox on Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Eck Stadium.

WICHITA, Kan. – The Hattiesburg, MS Black Sox defeated the Denver, CO Cougars 9-4 in the 2020 NBC World Series powered by Evergy on Wednesday night at Eck Stadium.

Jamal Washington and Marcus Regan led the Black Sox with two hits and two RBIs each, with Carter Pennington going 3-for-4 at the plate for the Cougars.

A single to right field by JT Hall allowed the game’s first run to score in the bottom of the first inning for the Black Sox, with two more runs crossing home following an error in the outfield. The Cougars chipped away to make it a one-run game through the middle of the fourth inning, but a two-RBI single from Regan and a wild pitch gave the Black Sox three runs to push the lead 6-2.

The Cougars cut the deficit to two runs after the top of the eighth inning, but the Black Sox struck again with another three-run outing in the bottom of the eighth. A solo home run from Pablo Lanzarote and a two-RBI double from Washington gave the Black Sox the five-run lead carried through the end of the game.

The Black Sox will play the Hutchinson, KS Monarchs on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. in Hutchinson.
